Seit April 2010 sind wir (Anna, Hanna und ich) für ein halbes Jahr unterwegs: von Berlin aus einmal um das Schwarze Meer herum. Das heißt neun Länder, vier da facto Länder und jede Menge Abenteuer. Alle Infos über unsere Reise gibt es auf dem The Family Without Borders Blog.

Es ist ein traumhaftes Wetter hier, das Volk setzt die Sonnenbrillen auf und strebt nach draußen. Die Frauen präsentieren erhobenen Hauptes die Errungenschaften des Frühjahrseinkaufs, die Alten füttern die Vögel. Im Hintergrund treffen sich Donau und Save und fließen gen Osten.

Am Wahlsonntag beschlossen wir, das verschlafene Städtchen Stuga per Anhalter in Richtung Kosovo zu verlassen. Nach einer halben Stunde Wartens hatten wir den ersten 30-Kilometer-Trip mit einem Pärchen das auf den Weg in die Pilze waren. Na klar – Pilze Anfang April. Aber sie waren jung und liebten den Wald und setzen uns ab. Da standen wir – in der Mitte von nirgendwo, an einer Parknische mit einem verbogenen Buszeichen, einem streunenden Hund der in uns seinen einzigen Freunde gefunden hatte. Und alle fuhren sie vorbei, keiner wollte anhalten und wir hatten noch einen halben Liter Wasser, drei Scheiben Brot und einem Stückchen Käse.

Dieser schwarze, in der Sonne funkelnde VW Passat, mit Klimaanlage und weißen Ledersitzen war eine Fata Morgana. Doch sie trug uns, getragen von albanischem Hip Hop, mit zwei lächelnden, dunkel bebrillten Albanern durch Berge, vorbei an Seen und Schnee, Dörfchen mit leuchtblauen Moscheen immer weiter, weiter überholend in Richtung Norden. Eisbierkaffestopp in Skopje und wir haben es tatsächlich zum ersten Mal geschafft Albaner einladen zu können und nicht umgekehrt. Zugegeben – aber nur, weil sie ihr getauschtes Geld Schein um Schein an gefräßige mazedonische Moutstellen verfütterten.

Grenze: Mazedonien – Kosovo

Endlich – die Grenze zum Kosovo – plötzlich, unvermutet. EU-Truppen und schwere Geländewagen von KFOR, OECD, UN. Man fragt uns, ob wir wirklich einen Stempel in unseren Pass haben wollen. Anna und ich blicken uns fragend an. Ein Stempel vom Kosovo im Pass kann leider zu erheblichen Problemen führen, wenn man wieder zurück.

Last Monday we ended up in Struga – a beautiful small sleepy city in the south of Macedonia, situated on a stunning huge mountain lake surrounded by high, still snow covered mountains. But this place is not only known as one of the most wonderufl spots in Macedonia, but for its High School. Or let’s say – the ethnical conflicts between Macedonian and Albanian pupils there.

About 25 percent of the two million Macedonian citizens are Albanians. In the Struga municipality, which is directly on the border to Albania, Albanians are even the majority. So according to the constitution and election results the mayor is Albanian, first language is Albanian and in front of the town hall you will find both flags: The Macedonian sun and the black hawk of Albania.

In Struga people life together peacefully – even so when Macedonia was close to an ethnical civil war in the year 2001. But for some reasons their kids, coming together the only high school of the municipality – there are fights between the boys of two ethnicities in the only high school of the city. And always before elections, when the parties try to attract voice mostly of “their own people”, suddenly media starts to report about violence in Stuga´s school and kids end up in hospital.

Anna and me have been at this school for five days in the time between the two rounds of presidential and local elections. We were talking to pupils and trying to understand what is going on there.

PS: At the moment we are in Pristina (Kosovo). We planned to go back to Belgrad, but unfortunately it’s not possible to cross a border to Serbia from here – so back to Skopje and then up to Belgrad.

Today in Macedonia the presidential and municipal elections took place. It looks like none of the candidates won in first round. The atmosphere in the city and election places was very calm even in neighborhoods with in which took place violence incidences in last elections.

The election evening we spent in the headquarter of the political party BDI/DUI – The (ethnic Albanian) Union for Integration with their candidate Izet Mexhiti, running for president.

I felt set back to old New York harbor pubs, everybody blowing smoke in this men club house, hundred eyes starring on our two blond girls. I was the German photographer, which some of the guys wanted to decorate with in front of the others, which mostly gave a shit on that. But all the people strongly felt the need to belong this group, even having not much idea what their candidates stand for. We will write more about our Skopje adventures tomorrow.

Nach zwei Wochen nur draußen, nur segeln auf der Ostsee fällt es schwer, wieder in den Berlin-Alltag einzutauchen. Die Flugzeuge wirken wieder ein bisschen lauter und die Arbeit, als müßte man erst ihren Sinn ergründen… Aber lasse wir das besser.
